    Introduction
I am a piano instructor who has recently moved to Syracuse from Bloomington, Indiana, where I taught a full studio of students of all ages. I believe that music is for everyone, and I endeavor to accommodate students of all ages, backgrounds, and learning styles while giving them a solid foundation of musical knowledge and technique in the classical tradition.

    My Teaching Background
I've been giving private piano lessons for 16 years- first in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California, then in Bloomington, Indiana, and now Syracuse. My students have ranged from age three to adult.

    My Teaching Philosophy
I emphasize an approach to piano that builds multiple areas of musicianship: sight reading, improvisation, composition, ear training, rhythmic exercises, and theory (understanding the structure and history of classical music). Most of a typical lesson with me will be working on learning pieces, and a smaller portion will be used to build those other skills: theory work, technique, ear training, etc. For younger students, this helps to keep them engaged and entertained for the duration of the lessons. Older students also find that the components of the lessons tie in and reinforce each other in their understanding of their music.

My approach emphasizes reading ability right from the beginning. This helps students learn and practice pieces independently. My expectation for students and (in the case of children) their families is that they will make a commitment to regular practice. Each student signs a Policy and Contract at the beginning of the year that describes his or her commitment as well as mine.

Although I teach classical piano, I encourage all my students to sample blues, jazz, folk, and various world music traditions as much as possible, and encourage students to make a "wish list" of music they'd like to learn as they advance. In the past, our student recitals have had themes like folk music around the world, famous operas, student compositions, and patriotic/American traditional music.

    Rates And Availability
I offer weekly lessons in my home studio for a monthly rate of $95 as of July 2017. I teach Sunday-Friday morning through evening, but please contact me for specific availability. For very young students, lesson length is 30 minutes; for all others it is 45.

I look forward to hearing from you!
