    About MeContact Me
I have been playing 5-string banjo for over 25 years and have a real love for Bluegrass music since I was raised in Virginia where bluegrass is prevelant. I teach beginning to intermediate level, Earls Scruggs style 3-finger picking that is predominantly used in traditional Bluegrass music. Some of the things a student will learn are basic roll patterns, timing, technique, songs and simple to intermediate bluegrass tunes, back-up techniques, Nashville numbering system, playing by ear, tabulature and more. I really care about my students and believe in positive reinforcement to have them progress at their comfort level.

    My Teaching Background
I have been teaching 5 string banjo lessons for the past 5 years and really enjoy working with students of all ages who have a desire to play this fun instrument. I have a background in music, having played the piano, trumpet, mandolin and acoustic guitar in addition to the banjo. I have performed on stage and have a band that I currently lead and play in. I also provide beginning students with instructional CD's demonstrating the various rolls and songs that I teach and that they can take home to learn and practice with.

    My Teaching Philosophy
My approach to teaching the 5 string banjo is to start with Tabulature for learning the basics and learning songs utilizing the various rolls and licks. I strive to move the student from strictly reading tabulature ( a method for playing without being able to read music) to playing by ear. This allows the student to then play with other people and not rely on tabulature which is what is necessary to play in jams and the real world of playing bluegrass. I believe that anyone who is committed to practice will quickly progress in their playing abilities. Since people learn in various ways and and at different speeds, I taylor each lesson to the individual student and their capabilites to maximize their progress.

    Rates And Availability
My fee is $30 for a full 30 minute lesson at my home. Sometimes the lesson may run for 45 minutes if needed at no extra charge. I do not come to student's homes.
