School's out.... Here's a great answer for: "Mom... what's to do?"
    Posted by Tim Mackey - June 21, 2014 - 9:22 PM

Are your kids bugging you to keep them "entertained" now that school's out???

Maybe you should let them take music lessons to keep them "productively occupied"
    during their Summer break?

I offer lessons on guitar (all styles - acoustic or electric), 5-string banjo, mandolin and violin.

Call today for best selection of available lesson slots!

Parents who want to be at all their kids' lessons trying to get free instruction for themselves. Has this ever happened to you?
    Posted by Tim Mackey - May 14, 2014 - 9:48 PM

I had a high school student start violin lessons who's father is a professional banjo player. The father wanted to be at ALL the lessons. I could tell by the questions he was asking that he just wanted to get free lessons for himself by only paying for his son's lessons and "auditing" them for free.

When I confronted him about this after the third lesson he took great offense at me asking him to start paying for "his lessons" or just let his son come in to my studio by himself from them on. The fact that he insisted on continuing to come in (with a 6 ft -4 inch 17 year old boy) just proves there was something else going on........

I'd be interested in hearing from other teachers, how they would handle this situation.

Our time is valuable and we need not be giving it away!!!!

Merry Christmas! Check out my Electric Violin recording of "What Child Is This?"

You're never "too old" to take music lessons!
    Posted by Tim Mackey - October 15, 2013 - 9:33 PM

During the past few years I have seen a resurgence in the number of lesson inquiries by "older" adults.

Actually over half of my students are over 30; and one just turned 80!

It is a known fact that playing a musical instrument and reading music stimulates the parts of the brain
that deal with memory and logic; and has proven to help delay or even avoid the onset of alzheimer's.
Also the playing of stringed instruments involves intricate finger movements and coordination, which is good
for stimulating muscles and counteracting effects of arthritis.

Fall and Winter are GREAT times to get into music lessons - the weather doesn't allow as many outdoor
activities - so, go buy a guitar, violin, mandolin or banjo and GIVE ME A CALL!!!!

Taking lessons at a music store may not be your best option
    Posted by Tim Mackey - June 19, 2013 - 9:05 PM

I just inherited a guitar student who had taken lessons at a local music store for THREE YEARS.
During his first lesson with me I wanted to measure his playing skills and grasp of music theory.
It became obvious very soon that he could barely read music; and even his basic playing techniques
(how to properly hold the pick, etc) were full of bad habits. I have found over the years that "teachers"
at music stores spend more effort focusing on "upgrading" their students into more expensive instruments
than making sure they get a well rounded musical education.

Any student that had been with me for THREE YEARS could be an "instructor" at most music stores!

If you or someone you know is interested in learning to play an instrument properly, please consider finding an
"independent" PRIVATE instructor first. He or she can advise you if/when a more expensive instrument is appropriate
based on the skill level of the student and type of music the student desires to play - not when the music store needs
to make their monthly sales quota ....................

Music lessons should be focused on learning to play, not buying instruments.

Now Accepting Saturday Students (by special arrangement)
    Posted by Tim Mackey - April 29, 2013 - 8:42 PM

I stopped accepting school age students on Saturdays a while back due to the number of cancellations caused by
soccer, baseball, lacrosse, volleyball, etc. etc. Recently I have made exceptions for adults and others willing
to accept my Saturday student "pay in advance - no cancellation" policy. If that fits with your needs - feel free to call
me and ask for a Saturday time slot.

More than half of my Students are "over 21"
    Posted by Tim Mackey - March 6, 2012 - 9:24 AM

That's right -- more than half of my students are "over 21". Music lessons are good for all ages. Reading music and
playing an instrument has been proven to sharpen mental abilities in a similar manner to solving complex puzzles.

Playing the instruments I teach (Guitar, Violin, Banjo and Mandolin) helps to keep the hands and fingers docile and
helps one to maintain higher levels of brain-hand-eye coordination as one ages.

If you are one of those "over 21" folks who think you are "too old" to start learning to play a stringed instrument, I
challenge you to give me a call and set up your first lesson. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much FUN
    you can have taking lessons!

"Strings of Praise" CD Just Released!!!!
    Posted by Tim Mackey - September 12, 2009 - 8:31 PM

    Hi all:

I'm pleased to announce the release of my latest music CD. It is called "Strings of Praise" due to the fact that I play a collection of stringed instruments on a dozen of today's most popular Christian Contemporary praise songs. It's all instrumental with me playing EVERYTHING on all the tracks (Guitars, Bass, Drums, Violins, Mandolin and guitar synthesizer for background keyboards, choral voices, horns, strings, etc...)

    The song list is:

    1) Blessed Be Your Name 5:22
    2) You Are Holy (Prince of Peace) 3:39
    3) Your Grace Is Enough 5:07
    4) You Are My All In All 4:07
    5) Open The Eyes Of My Heart 3:55
    6) I Will Not Be Shaken 4:13
    7) Hosanna 4:48
    8) Holy Is The Lord 4:03
    9) You Are My King 5:22
    10) Shout To The Lord 4:30
    11) Your Love Makes Me Sing 4:17
    12) How Great Is Our God 4:44

When the worship pastor at my church heard some of the first tracks, his comment was: " This would be a great CD for churches to own to play before and after services." Others in my church have commented: " This would be a great tool for introducing non-Christians to our contemporary music in a less theatening way, due to the fact that there are no lyrics being sung on the album..... maybe the listener would like the music and decide to try coming to church???"

You can hear one of the tracks at my facebook page: and on youtube.

It is currently available only in physical form for $10 plus $3 S&H.

You can get yours by emailing me here or calling me at 503-348-1957.
