    About MeContact Me
    Introduction
Music. Connections. Here at The Ark, we are all about forging deep connections- connecting families, connecting with people, connecting with nature, connecting with your community. As a universal language, music allows us to connect in a more personal way. Studies show that students of the arts perform better in all forms of scholarship, including STEM programs. Our primary goal is to help each student discover that music is more than just playing the right notes at the right time, but a way to communicate a moment, a picture, a memory, an emotion.

    My Teaching Background
Pianist, organist, and singer Amy Riffle-Kouyeas has made numerous appearances throughout the east coast and midwest. Favorites include: Canal Place, Frostburg State University, University of Maryland (Baltimore), Winthrop University, The Maryland Theatre, Shepherd University, Potomac State College, West Virginia University, Mount Union College, Porthouse Theatre, Kent State University, Taylor University, and Windsor Hall. As a musician, Amy is as comfortable in the classical world as she is in musical theatre, jazz standards, and pop. Most recently, Amy was the Director of Music at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee, where she led and directed both traditional and contemporary services.

In high demand as a teacher, Amy's students have been recognized by numerous venues and events such as the Maryland All-State Choir, the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Program at Johns Hopkins, the Cleveland Solo and Ensemble Festival and more. As a teacher, some of her favorite moments have included watching students perform with Parlament/Funkadelic's Bernie Worrell at Nelson Ledges, and teaching music workshops at DelFest with such music greats as Joe Craven and Ronnie McCoury. Her dedication to music education has been recognized by former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley and both senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski.

    Connecting with School
Over the years, there have been many studies demonstrating how music study improves students' performance in school. Here are just a few ways music draws from the various subjects students study in school:

Spatial Development- reading of intervals, hand-eye coordination.
Math- use of fractions in rhythm, understanding intervallic relationships.
Science- anatomy and physiology in developing technique, understanding acoustics, the mechanics of the piano.
History- brief overview and understanding of when and why and the background of the time period a song came from.
English- and communication- Stronger understanding of alphabet for young children, Understanding and communicating lyrics appropriately, sentence structure and breathing, Inclusion of Italian and German vocal literature at upper levels
    Connecting with nature
Beautiful setting- a quiet, large, rural, park-like setting complete with mature flowering bushes and plants. Come and recharge.
Outdoor seating area during lessons available- On beautiful days, why sit inside? Step out onto the patio and enjoy a book, or soak in some vitamin D while others are playing or singing.
Enjoy seeing chickens and bees and flowers- We've raised chickens for the past 5 years- this new flock will be our 3rd, and our 3 year old loves visiting the chickens. We'll be adding bees to our menagerie next, while continuing to work on maintaining and improving our bee, butterfly, hummingbird friendly flowers.
    Connecting with communities
Community has always been important to us- knowing our neighbors, our schools, our local business community, and leaders. We're new to Snohomish, but have fallen in love with it's history, it's river, it's mountain views, and it's beautiful downtown district. We're looking forward to getting to know Snohomish and being a part of it's future.
