    Introduction
I am a full-time professional musician teaching both piano and harp lessons in a private studio format. My goal in teaching is "Music Making". I love to see lights go on and to develop a life long love for music in students young and old. I teach all ages and abilities.

    My Teaching Background
I entered college as a piano performance major, later switching to harp performance. Eventually the tug of the "practical" won out and I graduated with a B.S. in Geology with a minor in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas. This degree has never been put to practical use, while I continued to play the harp during college professionally and taught piano lessons during my summers. So much for practicality! One cannot escape their first love. I love making music and teaching others how on both instruments--and I like to think that it shows. I have taught over 25 years.

My piano studies for 13 years were with the highly esteemed Frances Deaderick Stuart of Dallas, TX, a Dr Paul Van Katwijk student. When her studies with Dr Van Katwijk combine with her studies with Arthur Friedheim, she held a European musical heritage on the piano that traced quickly back to Liszt and Beethoven. She was the best teacher I could have ever asked for, as much a loving grandmother figure in my life as an instructor.

My concert harp studies were with Julia Hermann Edwards at Southern Methodist University (a direct student of Marcel Grandjany at Julliard) and Gayle Horn Barrington at The University of Texas (a direct student of Carlos Salzedo at his famed Camden Harp Colony and Alice Chalifoux in Cleveland). I'm grateful to say I have studied with the best of the best and their words of instruction linger in my ears today as I pass their wisdom and love for making music on to others. I perform on the harp throughout the Puget Sound for corporate events and weddings, as well as playing for the occasional stage orchestra or studio recording work. My professional harp website is www.soloharp.com Please visit and enjoy the tunes!

My studio holds two public recitals a year. These are formal and held in a recital hall in Tacoma. Attendance is required, participation is optional, but very highly encouraged. Music making is to be a shared!

I am a member of the Puyallup Valley Music Teachers Association, tied in the Washington and the National Music Teacher's Association, a member of the American String Teacher's Association and the Greater Seattle Chapter as well as the National Chapter of the American Harp Society.

    My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching style is structured and focused. Then, I flex. I create a plan according to the goals and abilities of each student. Everyone learns differently! A detailed studio policy and my overall philosophy of teaching will be given to you at your first lesson.

    Rates And Availability
I teach in my private home studio in Central Tacoma near Union Ave and Hwy 16, just down the street from University of Puget Sound. If you are a harp student, there is no need to bring your own harp to the lesson unless you prefer to. I have a pedal harp and 6 smaller lever harps for teaching. My primary piano is a lovely 100 year old refurbished mahogany Steinway Baby Grand. I also have a Baldwin spinet for duets and improvising instruction. I am proud that my music studio is comfortable and visually stimulating as everywhere you look you see something musically inspiring.

If you do not yet own a harp, I have two rental harps available for a minimum of 2 month rental programs up to 1 yr rentals. I carry the insurance on the rental harps. In addition, if you hope to purchase your own harp I am happy to assist you in your search locally for a quality affordable instrument.

I teach Tuesday-Thursday from 8-5 pm. No evening or weekend lessons, including Fridays. School aged students have lessons once a week. Some adults choose to come every other week, or less frequently.

Lessons are billed by the month, with payment due on the first lesson of each month. No refunds are given for missed or cancelled appointments by student. If there's enough notice given a make-up might be possible, but only within the same calendar month.

HARP Lessons are $30 per half hour, $45 for 45 minutes, $60 for 60 minutes. Based on weekly lessons.
PIANO Lessons are $25 per half hour, $37.50 for 45 minutes, $50 for 60 minutes. Based on weekly lessons.

A discount is applied for the second sibling in a family.

Some adults prefer fewer lessons per month. These rates do not apply for school aged students. If lessons are only once or twice a month the rates are a bit higher per 30 minute lesson:

    $35/30 min lesson for PIANO 1 X month, $30/lesson for 2 X month or $70 for an hour lesson 1 X month
    $40/30 min lesson for HARP 1 X month, $35/lesson for 2 X month or $80 for an hour lesson 1 X month

Communication and planning ahead is key between student and teacher when scheduling infrequent lessons.

I have a website with online billing and a payment portal for ease of service. Late fees do apply.
