    About MeContact Me
I've been teaching cello students from beginners through advanced players of all ages for over 30 years. I love teaching, and have found that the many years of experience I have had have given me more confidence, more joy, and greater success in helping students in a wide range of ages and levels of expertise. I have played cello for most of my life - about 45 years now. My mother drove me two hours each way to a great cello teacher, George Neikrug, all through high school. I studied with Aldo Parisot at Yale where I got my BA in Literature, and then with Harvey Shapiro at The Juilliard School where I got a Masters degree in Performance. While I continued playing after Juilliard, I also started to work in Arts Administration and directed The Piatigorsky Foundation in NYC for 5 years, bringing concerts to underserved communities, and now in Seattle, I am director of Carlsen Cello Foundation which loans fine cellos to deserving students. In Seattle, I have been Assistant Principal of Tacoma Symphony, Principal cellist of Philharmonia Northwest, have played with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Choral Company, and numerous other local chamber and orchestral ensembles. I have taught and coached adult players for many years at the Puget Sound Chamber Music Workshop and at the Chamber Music Madness Adult Chamber Music Retreat. My private studio has remained active and busy throughout, and I have always been extremely dedicated to not only the private lessons themselves, but to giving each student whatever extra is needed to enrich their experience - recitals, cello ensemble gatherings with other cello students, music theory, music appreciation, help in choosing extra-curricular music activities and getting placed in the best fit for chamber music workshops....
For me, lessons need to be lively, goal-oriented (although geared for each student individually), and positive. There is ALWAYS productive work to do together, and I have many years of experience in choosing appropriate and awarding repertoire, from etudes to solo pieces, to chamber and orchestral excerpts.
Please give me a call at 206.579.6233, and we can talk and/or set up a first lesson. My rate is $80/hour.
Thanks so much and I look forward to meeting you or doing anything I can to help you find what you are looking for.
