    Introduction
    We are a Seattle based Dj Academy that offers a wide range of classes and courses to choose from. From basic music theory and mixing to programming a set or getting your own mobile Dj business up and running we offer the skills in order for you to do so.

    My Teaching Background
    We are the leader in Seattle for DJ education with over 13 years of experience. Through In The Groove DJ Academy you will be exposed to Seattle's leaders of the industry as they share their expertise with you. Our sole purpose is to equip you with the knowledge you need to succeed in the fast paced, competitive world of DJ'ing and entertainment.

    We understand that each student learns at his/her own pace and in different ways. We share the same enthusiasm for music as our students and encourage learning outside the confines of our classroom in their everyday lives.

    DJ101 Intro to DJ’ing (8 hours classroom time) $299
    DJ101 is where it all starts. This class will give you the basic fundamentals of DJ’ing, the equipment used, and basic mixing techniques. If you have never DJ’ed before or need to know the basics, this is where you begin your journey.

    • History
    • Basic Music Theory & Song Structure
    • In’s and Out’s of Equipment (turntables, mixers, speakers, etc.)
    • Intro to Scratching and Timing
    • The basics of mixing
    • Intro to Serato Live, Traktor Scratch Pro, CDJs and Vinyl Mixing Consoles

    • “How to DJ Right” by Frank Broughton & Bill Brewster
    • Stephen Webber’s “DJ Skills The Essential Guide to Mixing & Scratching”

    DJ202 Intro to Mixing (8 hour classroom time) $299
    If you have completed DJ101, or you would like to have a better understanding of mixing and matching beats, this is the class for you. Beatmatching is the key element to Djing, and having the ability to seamlessly mix two beats together is what will get any crowd going. Mastering this technique is the core skill of any DJ.

    Course Outline
    • Understanding and calculating BPM’s (beats per minute)
    • Locating the first beat and how to beatmatch
    • Starting your records in time
    • Using Pitch control
    • Basic Digital DJ’ing
    • Intro to mixing various genres and songs that compliment each other
    • Introducing your headphones and how they are properly used

    Class Requirements
    • Stephen Webber’s “DJ Skills The Essential Guide to Mixing & Scratching”
    • Completion of DJ101 or an instructor evaluation that shows that you understand the basic fundamentals of mixing.
    • If you have your own equipment we encourage that you bring it.
    • Headphones
    • Serato Scratch Live or Traktor Scratch Pro if you have it.

    DJ303 Intermediate Mixing (6 hours classroom time) $225
    This course will teach you how to analysis beats and bars within a song and understand that every tune is different. Every DJ needs to understand structure, and you will gain this by learning to multiply beats, bars, phrases and understanding basic song structure. You will also develop your basic instincts and memory as a DJ so that you won’t miss a beat.

    Course Outline
    • Better understanding of song structure and mixing points
    • Record adjustment techniques for tempo changes
    • Using volume control and EQ’s during transitions
    • Mixing various genres and songs that compliment each other

    Class Requirements
    Intermediate & Advanced students are encouraged to purchase their own needles, laptop, control discs, records and digital software because in a real live setting you would need your own equipment. But if you don’t have some of these items, we can provide them for you.
    • Completion of DJ101, DJ202 or an instructor evaluation that shows that you understand the basic fundamentals of mixing.

    DJ404 Advanced Mixing (6 hours classroom time) $225
    During this course you will have mastered the art of mixing. You will discover the secret of channel-faders, cross-faders, perfect placement of intros and outros, mixing breakdowns and simply controlling the sound of the mix. You will be mixing like the pros!

    Course Outline
    • Using channel faders
    • Using mixing tricks and gimmicks
    • Mastering of mixing skills (transitions, temp changes, blends)
    • Problem solving and timed troubleshooting of variations of equipment set-ups
    • Mastering the art of mixing different styles of music together
    • How to program a live set

    Class Requirements
    Intermediate & Advanced students are encouraged to purchase their own needles, laptop, control discs, records and digital software because in a real live setting you would need your own equipment. But if you don’t have some of these items, we can provide them for you.
    • Completion of DJ101, DJ202, DJ303 or an instructor evaluation that shows that you understand the intermediate fundamentals of mixing.

    SC101 Intro to Scratching (4 hours classroom time) $199
    Once you have gotten the basics down that you learned in DJ101 and DJ202, its time to learn a technique that will set you apart from other DJs, scratching. Or maybe you already understand mixing fundamentals and you need to work on your scratching. Either way learning this will help you express your creativity during live performances and or production.

    Course Outline
    • Learning and understanding scratches such as stab, chirp, flare, transform, and other intricate scratch patterns
    • How to use scratching techniques along with trick mixing

    Class Requirements
    As always if you have your own equipment and or digital software we encourage you to bring it. If not, we will provide it for you.
    • Completion of DJ101 and DJ202 or an instructor evaluation that shows that you understand the basic fundamentals of mixing.

    SC202 Intermediate Scratching (6 hours classroom time) $225
    After you have completed SC101, you will be able to practice and perfect the art of scratching in this course. We will create strings of different scratches over a beat as well as learn to skill of beatjuggling.

    Course Outline
    • The progression of the scratches that you learned in SC101
    • Juggling the beats
    • How to scratch without the cross fader
    • Perfecting scratching with the use of trick mixing
    • How to improve timing, syncopation, and combining scratches
    • How to put together a battle routine
    • Two hour of workshop; practice time

    Class Requirements
    As always if you have your own equipment and or digital software we encourage you to bring it. If not, we will provide it for you.
    • Completion of SC101 or an instructor evaluation that shows that you understand the basic fundamentals of scratching.

    PR101 Intro to Production (6 hours classroom time) $299
    This class will teach you the fundamentals of making beats, song structure and the use of programs such as Abelton. By the end of this you will have created at least one original track.

    Course Outline:

    • How to record a demo and understanding editing basics
    • Creating mash-ups
    • Fundamentals of Ableton Live software
    • Warping and time stretching
    • Beat structure, picking and arranging tunes
    • Plug-ins and effects
    • Multi-tracking
    • Understanding looping and drumming

    Class Requirements
    Your thirst for knowledge and the production side of DJ’ing!

    MK101 Intro to Marketing (One 2 hour class) $99
    This is a very important class for anyone who is interested in becoming a mobile DJ or wanting to make a career out of DJ’ing.

    Course Outline
    • Developing professionalism and networking skills
    • Creating a brand, including Social Media and Marketing basics
    • Goal setting and how to reach them
    • Social and professional skills through verbal and written communication

    FM101 Facing the Music (6 hours classroom time) $225
    In this course you will learn all the fundamentals of putting on a live show! Facing the Music will cover everything from the importance of stage presence, finding a venue, to preparing to perform live.

    • Working in a loud environment
    • Stage presence
    • Reading and rocking a crowd
    • Transitioning from one DJ set to the next
