Margie Pasero | Offering private lessons in Wilkeson, Washington |
Introduction My name is Margie Pasero. I conduct African drumming playshops and classes in the the South King and North Pierce County areas. I have been involved in education and music for the past 40 years. Hand drumming is a wonderful way to create community while learning rhythm concepts and having FUN! My playshops are light-hearted, educational, inspiring, and teach Afro-Cuban hand drumming tecniques to children and adults of all ages.
My Teaching Background I worked for the Renton School District from 1981-1999, at which time I decided to move on and teach African Drumming. In addition to my public school experience I volunteered in many teaching positions over the years, while raising my children. I taught in church school, volunteered for the girl scouts and in my son's cooperative preschool. I have vast experience counseling with both teenagers and adults from my years at Hazen High School.
My musical background includes playing the clarinet for 40 years. I was a member of the Renton City Concert Band for 15 years, before moving to the Enumclaw area. I am currently enjoying playing with the Plateau Community Orchestra and the Gateway Concert Band. In 1999 I resigned from my job at Hazen High School to pursue my love of hand-drumming. I took lessons from Geoff Johns and Simone LaDrumma in Seattle. My main mentor and teacher is Bill Matthews of Fremont Drum School, where I studied for 6 years.
I am a member of "Twilight Time" - a quartet, and "Namaste, Women Who Drum" - both performing groups. In the past I played with "OmBili" - an Afro-Cuban-Tribal-Jazz performing group in the Seattle area. I have been involved in recording CD's with both OmBili and Twilight Time.
My Teaching Philosophy My approach to teaching is to make my "workshop" a "playshop" where we are experiencing the joy and adventure of world percussion. I begin by moving our bodies to the rhythms of African drumming. I explore small world percussion instruments through rhythm games and allow the students to feel their inner pulse as they create basic rhythms on the drums. We then move on learning about drumming in Africa and how drums are made and tuned. Basic hand positions are explored and, finally, we learn 2 and 3 part African rhythms.
"Margie teaches and leads wonderfully and everyone has fun and learns, too. We have not only had enormous fun, but have learned and grown in our abilities. The rhythm experiences my children and I have had have additionally enhanced other musical pursuits." - Parent and Fellow Drummer
"Ms. Pasero has demonstrated great flexibility in adapting to the variety of learning styles represented in our group of students, as well as to the changing mood and spirit of the class..one of the wonderful things about Ms. Pasero is how her educational experience helps her to gracefully handle all classroom situations." - Principal, Maimonides Sephardic Day School, Seattle, WA
"Thank you so much for drumming with our children this year...they loved the drumming, rhythm instruments, and dancing. they made so much progress with their rhythms over the year. It was wonderful to see the children fully engaged in music! Your energy and enthusiasm were clearly infectious." - Head Teacher, University Cooperative School, Seattle, WA
"Margie has a special musical talent that would be a wonderful opportunity for any child or adult to experience sharing" - Member of Renton City Concert Band
