    About MeContact Me
Hello! I currently live in Miami Beach, while playing flute with the New World Symphony. Previously, I played principal flute with the Des Moines Symphony, and second flute/piccolo with the Sarasota Opera Orchestra. I received my Master of Music degree in flute performance from the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. Before that, I attended the Curtis Institute of Music for my bachelor's degree in Philadelphia. I have 13 years of flute performance experience, including 1st place winner of the Young Texas Artist Competition and soloing with the Philadelphia Orchestra. I have 8 years of teaching experience, including teaching for a summer at Luzerne Music Center.

    My Teaching Background
I have been involved with music since the age of 5. I played piano for 8 years before switching to flute, and have loved flute ever since! I taught in several Houston area middle schools and high schools during my studies at Rice, and have been teaching ever since then. I am currently looking for private students in the Miami area.

Here are some student testimonials from previous students/parents:

"While taking lessons from Masha, I became more confident in my sound, I grew more familiar with a variety of rhythms, I learned to think musically, and I had a lot of fun!" - Alex, 9th grader.

"Ms. Masha taught me how to read notes and play scales with the correct fingering and sound. If I made a mistake, she would help me to perfect it! Her teaching made me want to practice more and continue learning how to play the flute!" - Ashley, 5th grader.

"My son took flute lessons with a teacher who is a member of the national symphony in Hanoi. The teacher observed that my son played quite well for a student with two years of practice and that he had had good instruction." - Parent of a middle school student after taking lessons with me for 8 months.

"SHE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" - Mitchell, 7th grader.

"I really like the way Masha found small errors and concentrated on the details of the piece so that the general quality of the music could improve. Masha is a great teacher and a fun person to learn from!" - Andi, 9th grader.

"I had the pleasure to obtain flute lessons from Masha Popova. Masha is an excellent teacher in all respects. She addresses fundamentals, techniques and tonal skills, while supporting her advice with pertinent pieces. I have taken flute lessons from many teachers. Masha stands out in being fresh and unassuming. I miss her. But I wish her a very successful career wherever she chooses to go." - Verena, adult student.

    My Teaching Philosophy
I encourage all my students to ask questions - the more, the better. Since I only see students once a week, during the lesson my main goal is to make sure that the student knows what and, more importantly, how to practice during the week. I try to develop a fine ear in every student, as that is the best tool for individual practicing at home! In addition, I often show different exercises for students in order to help them fix certain problems in whatever they might be working on. The discipline that we learn as musicians can be extremely beneficial in all areas of life. I make sure to play duets at the end of every lesson with every student, as the most important part of playing the flute is enjoying playing music with other musicians!
