Laura Byrne Egan | Offering private lessons in Baltimore, Maryland |
Introduction I teach and perform both the classical silver "boehm system" flute and the Irish traditional wooden "simple system" flute. While I've been playing the silver flute for 28 years and studied at Peabody Conservatory, today I perform mostly Irish music - however I still continue and enjoy teaching both styles and flutes.
My Teaching Background I graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in 1995 receiving a BM in Flute Performance and a BM in Music Education. I taught silver flute at the Suzuki School of Maryland from 1996 - 1998 and have been teaching Irish flute at Goucher College since 2002. In all, I've been teaching silver flute privately since the late 1980's and Irish flute since 2000. I founded the Baltimore Irish Arts Center in 2002 which offers group lessons in Irish music. I've performed across the U.S. and in Ireland and also teach & perform yearly at the Catskills Irish Arts Week in East Durham which is one of the world's most highly regarded Irish music festivals. I perform in the recently formed band "The Hedge Band" with legendary button accordion player Billy McComiskey, pianist and fiddler Donna Long (formerly of Cherish the Ladies) and guitarist and singer Pat Egan. My first solo recording, Tune for the Road received great reviews and radio play on both sides of the Atlantic. The CD was hailed by Pat Costello of Clare FM as "powerful flute playing" and Irish Music Magazine says "her grasp of the traditional Irish style is astounding." I also recorded on a compilation remix album of the late Eva Cassidy and was a 2007 Maryland State Arts Council grant in traditional music.
My Teaching Philosophy I believe that creating music should be an enjoyable experience. While I challenge my students, my goal is to inspire love and appreciation of music- students should want to practice and enjoy playing music.
Classical Flute: Bring to lesson: instrument, small staff paper notebook, pencil and music We will work on tone production, scales, and technical studies, band music, audition music (such as All-State, chair test music, and music for solo and ensemble contests), sight-reading and duets.
Irish Flute: Bring to lesson: instrument (lessons can be taught on silver flute, wooden flute or tin whistle), recording device This is an aural tradtion and the music is best taught and learned that way. I'll help you develop your ability to learn and play music by ear. We'll work on all types of traditional Irish dance tunes as well as some slow airs. You'll learn and work on the ornaments and technique it takes to make this music sound Irish.
Rates And Availability I teach out my home studio in Baltimore. Lessons are $40 per hour or $30 for a half hour (only recommended for very young students).
