Josiah Boothby | Offering private lessons in Seattle, Washington |
Thank you for looking at my page! A better place to find information about me and my teaching is my own website: http://josiahboothby.org
Introduction I have been playing the horn since 1992, continued playing through high school and college, and am currently a professional musician and teacher. As a performer, I play with the Bellevue Philharmonic and with several chamber ensembles, currently including a wind quintet and a new music ensemble. I work closely with composers or improvise whenever I can, and regularly play folk music, jazz, and with rock bands.
My Teaching Background I've been teaching privately since 2004. One of my students recently graduated from high school and is now attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on music scholarship, and is now studying orchestral horn as well as jazz. I work with the Academy of Music Northwest as a chamber music coach, working with high-school aged musicians, and additionally have considerable teaching experience outside the music community.
My Teaching Philosophy I teach holistically; I think in whole phrases, put pieces together in whole forms, and bring that out in my students.
Competition played an important role in my personal development, so I encourage students to take part in contests and teach them about engaging in healthy competition. My most advanced students have won awards at the state solo competition and get the highest marks at regionals.
I love music theory and composition, and although I abandoned the dream of writing as a focus, I incorporate those aspects of musicianship into lessons.
Rates And Availability I charge $50 per hour, or $30 per half-hour for younger students. I don't currently have a space to teach in, so I am generally accustomed to traveling to students' homes or schools for lessons.
Website I have a website where I have more up-to-date information than I have here, as well as occasional blog posts, links to useful or interesting things that are usually relevant to my teaching.
