    Introduction
    Biography

Jon P. Nicholson is a professional musician, educator, composer, conductor, and performer that has inspired the love of music in young and old.

As an educator Jon’s passion is private teaching and tutoring college students. He has also taught at Arizona State University in Phoenix, AZ, the University of New England in New South Wales, Australia, and Yavapai Community College in Sedona, AZ. He has taught music in preschools, elementary and high schools, and adult education classes. Jon wrote and directed a musical play for a middle school, another for a high school, and he organized, directed, and was the featured performer in an international variety show for the Ein Gede Kibbutz in Israel. He taught a workshop in music improvisation for the New Zealand Navy Band. His book entitled “Keyboard Scale Fingering,” presents a unique fingering system based on key signatures, the topography of the keyboard, and the physical properties of the hands. It has been praised by teachers and experienced students alike for its logical approach to solving fingering problems.

As a church music director Jon has conducted adult choirs, children’s choirs, instrumental groups, hand bell choirs, and praise bands. He took one of his choirs from Florida on a singing tour of cathedrals in Scotland and England. Most of Jon’s compositions have been written for and performed in churches. He owns copyrights for numerous choral anthems, praise songs, and children’s songs. His copyrights also include hand bell music, organ preludes and postludes, and popular music.

As an entertainer he has played piano, guitar, and sung, both as a soloist and with bands, in restaurants, clubs, resorts, and on a cruise ship. For five years he played piano with a five-piece club band in Australia that regularly backed recording artists.

Jon received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music at Arizona State University where he studied music theory and composition with Dr. Grant Fletcher, the internationally known composer and conductor. He continued music study at the doctoral level at the Sydney Conservatory in Australia and at the University of South Florida in Tampa, where he premiered four of Dr. Fletcher’s piano compositions on WUSF radio. He has studied jazz in a workshop taught by Jamie Abersold and at the Jazz-On-The-Rocks workshop in Sedona AZ.
