Jim Howell | Offering private lessons in Tucson, Arizona |
Introduction Jim Howell is a private drum set and percussion instructor in Tucson, Arizona. He teaches six days a week and performs almost weekly playing drums with one of many bands around town. Jim's specialty is drum set instruction and performance but he also teaches snare, school percussion and a variety of other percussion instruments. While his main stylistic influence is Rock, Jim has a deep knowledge and appreciation of all American music genres and their rich history tracing back to Blues/Jazz/Country etc... Jim believes that a solid foundation in all American styles will give a drummer the depth, versatility, and confidence to play even the most contemporary drum set styles. (Translation: Everyone should learn how to play a shuffle!)

Jim obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Northern Arizona University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in December of 2000. Jim has continued to study music theory and performance through the excellent music program at Pima Community College and studied privately with Homero Ceron (Tucson Symphony Principal Percussionist and Pima CC instructor). He has worked with several other private percussion instructors and taken years of lessons in piano, voice, cello, and guitar.
My Teaching Philosophy Percussion is one of the most ancient forms of musical expression in human history. It is a mental, physical, and spiritual pursuit. Learning has a variety of styles including visual, auditory, tactile, and reading which must be taught together as every individual has differing abilities to absorb information. Therefore, reading music, creative experimentation, listening, observation and ear training are all equal parts of well rounded music study. Most importantly though, music is fun and should be exciting and focused on individual goals and needs. Each student is unique and should be treated as such.
Students must PRACTICE! All of the development and learning one desires will follow if you practice regularly. Ideally, 30-60 minutes every day.
Rates And Availability Jim teaches at three convenient locations. He has his own lesson studio located in his midtown home (Tucson Blvd/Ft. Lowell area) and is the principal drum set and percussion instructor at both Beaver's Band Box locations carrying over 60 students and teaching six days a week. Each lesson is a private half-hour at $25 per session. Most students pay by the month and keep a regular time slot. However, fill-in lessons, hour sessions and bi-weekly appointments are possible.
Jim teaches from his Home Studio Fridays (2-6pm) and Saturdays (8am-9:30 + 3pm-5pm) at the Beaver's on Oracle on Mon/Tues/Wed (1pm-8pm)/Sat (10am-2pm) and at Beavers on Broadway Thursdays (2-8pm). Contact him to find out what times and days might be available at the moment.
