  • Do I need to supply a credit card to create my profile?

No. We offer an ample free trial to allow you to evaluate our service without providing any credit card details.

  • Why do you need my ZIP code?

Visitors to LearningMusician.com seach our database to find teachers in their immediate area. We use ZIP codes to show visitors the teachers in their area. Without a ZIP code, we can't tell where your teaching studio is located!

  • How much of my personal information can website visitors see?

Visitors see your picture and list of skills, your username, city, state, and whatever description you provide in the "About Me" section of your profile. They do not see your ZIP code, address, phone number, or any other personal information, unless you write it into your "About Me" section. We strongly advise against doing this - for your safety, it's far better to screen students via a phone call before sharing your personal information with them. To see how your profile looks to visitors, log in and click on the ďMy ProfileĒ tab.

  • I tried to upload my picture, but it didnít seem to work. Whatís wrong?

Make sure the title of your picture file ends in .jpg or .gif. Other file types, such as .tif, .pdf, or .doc cannot be accepted. There is also a maximum size limit on the pictures you upload. If your image is fairly large, you may be encountering this limit. Try to resize the picture before uploading it. If you are stuck, send your picture in an email attachment to staff@learningmusician.com and weíll post it for you.

  • Not all of my skills were available in the pulldown list when I created my profile. How can I get them included?

The skills list denotes major categories of musical skill - it is designed not to fully describe your experience, but rather to roughly identify you using the keywords your potential students tend to search for. In the text of your profile, you have room to describe your background, experience, and teaching approach in as much detail as you want.

  • How many skills should I list in my profile?

Itís up to you. Some students are suspicious of teachers who list more skills than most people could truly master. You definitely want to list any instruments you teach. But should you list ďbasic music theory,Ē for example, if itís just part of what you teach in regular instrument/voice lessons? You should if you want people who are searching for basic music theory lessons to find you. But if you want to present yourself as an instrument/voice teacher first and foremost, you might want to save the details for the text of your profile.

  • I registered on the site, but I havenít gotten any inquiries yet. What should I do?

Check your profile. First, make sure you have included your ZIP code and the skills you teach. These two pieces of information are necessary in order for your profile to come up when someone searches for a teacher in your area. Next, consider your profile from the point of view of a website visitor. Do you have a photograph? Does your description of yourself and your teaching practice give people a good sense of what youíre like? When potential students are browsing for a teacher, you want to create a welcoming impression.

The statistics we collect on site performance point to a few consistent factors when it comes to teachers who generate a large number of student inquiries. Successful teachers include a clear, friendly-looking picture and write a detailed profile in the first person. Their profile is less like a resume, and more like a personal "story" that helps potential students explain where they're coming from.

  • My teaching profile does not show up in search results. Are you sure the search engine works?

Check your profile to make sure you included your ZIP code and listed the skills you teach. Searches are conducted by location and skills, so without these, your profile wonít come up in any searches.

  • How do I edit my profile?

You can change or edit your profile at any point. Here's what you need to do:

      1. Log into The Learning Musician with your username and password.
      2. Click the My Profile tab.
      3. On the sidebar on the left side of the screen, click "About Me" to edit your biographical information.
      4. Make the changes you want, then click "Update My Profile" at the bottom of the text editing area to save your changes.
      5. If you want to change your city, state, or ZIP code, click "Contact Information" in the sidebar. Again, click "Update My Profile" to save your changes.
      6. To change your skills list or photograph, use the same procedure, clicking on "Skills" or "My Photo."

The changes you make will appear instantly on the site. If you're not seeing the changes you made, be sure that you clicked "Update My Profile." - if you navigate away from the page without clicking this button, your changes will not be saved.

In some cases, you may want to hit the "refresh" button on your web browser to be sure you're seeing the latest version of your profile. This is especially true for updating your photo.

  • Why do you need my email address?

The email address we have on file for you at The Learning Musician is crucial - we use it to notify you of student inquiries as well as important updates to the site.

If you're moving or changing Internet providers, it's important to keep your email address on file with us up to date. You can do this by clicking My Profile, then clicking Email Preferences on the left side of the screen, and finally clicking Change This Address.
