An experienced performer, she also has more than 10 years’ teaching experience, both in the private studio and the public school classroom. She holds a K-12 teaching certificate in both vocal and instrumental music education.

Mrs. Batey is a member of several professional music teacher's organizations, includng MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), AMTA, (Alabama Music Teachers Association), BTMA (Birmingham Music Teachers Association), and NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing)

Mrs. Batey has appeared as a soloist with the Birmingham Concert Chorale and the Alabama Symphony, and South City Theatre in Alabaster, AL. She has sung regularly with Opera Birmingham, where she has performed in productions of Orfeo, Madama Butterfly, Carmen, La Traviata, The Magic Flute, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Aida.

She is currently a soprano soloist and youth music director for South Highland Presbyterian Church , whose choir is under the direction of Dr. Philip Copeland.

    My Teaching Philosophy

Students of this studio are taught all skills necessary for a well-rounded education in music, including theory, sight-reading, musicianship, and ear-training.

Students are given regular opportunities to perform for their peers and others, not as an end in itself, but as a means to gain self-confidence in musical expression. An emphasis is placed on regular practice, realizing progress cannot be made without this commitment on the part of the student.

It is my hope that every student will work toward developing the skills necessary to enjoy music for a lifetime.

Regardless of what singing style appeals to you, I can help you achieve your goals. We'll work on proper alignment, breath control, range expansion, & making your voice strong, powerful, rich, & expressive! Our work together will also include song interpretation, poise & presentation, as well as ear training & music reading skills.

I work with people of all ages from 6 to 76. I am happy to work with anyone who wants to learn whether they are just beginning, a seasoned professional, or somewhere in-between. It also doesn’t matter if you are taking lessons for fun & recreation or are serious about a career in music.

Our first meeting will be a free consultation in which I'll listen to your voice, give you feedback, & explain how I'll work with you. I will also answer any questions you may have.
