    About MeContact MeBlog
I am an avid chamber music performer and soloist on viola da gamba and early cello in New York City, and I love to teach private lessons and coach chamber music groups. I have thought a lot about the technique of playing the viol and the cello, and my driving force in teaching is to help people make a good musical sound. I love the excitement of detecting what needs tweaking in students' bodies to allow the sound and the music to come out.

    My Teaching Background
I have a BM in cello, with a minor in early music. I started viola da gamba as a sophomore cello major, and continued my serious studies of the viol (Renaissance and baroque music, solo, consort, continuo) after graduation. I have been teaching privately for 18 years, and at summer workshops for 25 years. I have been one of the major performers on viola da gamba and early cello in New York since 1985, and a member of America's premier viol consort, Parthenia, since 1995. I am also a long-time member of Princeton's Dryden Ensemble and was an original member of ARTEK. Since fall of 2012, I have worked at Tempesta di Mare, Philadelphia's baroque orchestra, as principal cello and viola da gamba soloist. I am the Vice President of the Viola da Gamba Society of America.

    My Teaching Philosophy
I help students integrate their body and minds. I show them how to teach themselves - how to monitor tension and allow relaxation. I train them in slow, thoughtful practice of mindful exercises that train specific parts of their technique. I coach them. and teach them to coach themselves, in the few basic tenets of good music making that can help them build - with these structural and spiritual units - a mature and cohesive musical point of view.
