One option is using the ABC format to write musical notation. ABC is a way of expressing music notation using plain text. It's takes a little learning to get used to, but it's pretty easy when you get the hang of it.

The idea would be: a teacher could write:
Here's the exercise I want you to work on: [abc]
... ABC notation goes here
[/abc]
Then, the student would see a graphical representation of the exercise the teacher had specified.
Do you think something like that would be convenient and workable?
