    About MeContact MeBlog
I am a pianist and piano teacher in Bellingham, Washington. I specialize in teaching the whole musician, and I work with young children through adults.

    My Teaching Background
I have been teaching piano for 32 years. My other teaching experiences include directing a children's choir and teaching general music to grade school children. My training includes a piano performance degree from WWU, piano study in Germany with Herr Gregory Gruzmann and certification through the Music Teachers' National Association, through which I completed the requirements for Permanent Lifetime Certification in 2007. I am a member and on the board of the Bellingham Music Teachers' Association, a local professional association that provides me with ongoing training as well as opportunities for my students to participate in master classes, recitals and contests. I am also active as a pianist, accompanist and church musician.

    My Teaching Philosophy
I enjoy helping students to become well-rounded musicians. I work on ear-training and improvization as well as sight-reading and interpreting piano repertoire. In lessons and classes we also explore music theory and history and I encourage my students to compose and to play duets and chamber music. I also provide opportunities for performance, from informal community-service concerts to local competitions. I look for students who have a respect for the musical traditions of the past as well as a willingness to create music and explore new sounds at the piano. At the beginning of the term I help each student to create a list of goals that will guide us through the year. These goals might include memorizing four or more pieces for the Guild Auditions, entering a composition contest, learning chords on the guitar, reading a book on a musical topic or creating a visual display for a recital. My students leave my studio not only with a mastery of the instrument but with a sense of the joy of music-making, as a soloist and as a collaborator with other musicians.

    Rates And Availability
I teach in my home at Lake Samish, just south of Bellingham. My rates are $80/month for half-hour, once-a-week lessons, $120 for 45-minute lessons and $160 for 1-hour lessons.
