About This Website
Who runs LearningMusician.com?

My name's Michael Connolly. I own and operate the site, answer the phones, and generally try to keep things running smoothly. I'm a musician, music teacher, and computer geek in Seattle, WA.

I started this website in early 2005 to help keep my fiddle and mandolin students organized and to advertise for new students. I can honestly say that I had no idea what I was getting into, or just how many music teachers in this nation were looking for new students! One thing led to another, and now the site serves more than 1,000 private music teachers nationwide.

What exactly does this site do?

Simply put, this website helps private music teachers and their potential students find each other. Throughout the United States, there are skilled music teachers who have can't find enough students to fill their studios. Meanwhile, there's also a huge number of potential students who can't find a teacher in their area.

This site brings those two groups of people together -- quickly, easily, and with as little hassle and fuss as possible. For students, it's a free way to compare music teachers and find a perfect match. For teachers, it's an extremely cost-effective form of advertising -- and many teachers use their LearningMusician profile as their professional home page on the Web.

Want to see for yourself? Just click the Find A Teacher button at the top of the page, and look for a music teacher near your home.

There's another purpose to the site which is a little less commercial. I've been playing music since I was about six years old; it's been a huge part of my life, and I want to provide a place for people to think and talk about what it means to be a "learning musician." That's why the site has forums where teachers and students talk about the ins and outs of playing and teaching. We also publish feature articles including interviews, how-tos on teaching, and more.

Does this site cost money? Why isn't it free?

Yes, site membership costs money if you're a music teacher using the site to find new students. I don't believe in charging people for a service that doesn't work for them, so I offer a two-month free trial to help demonstrate that the website will deliver new students to their studio.

The rates, which have never increased since I started the site, start at $9.95 for a single month of access, and fall to about $7.08 per month when you buy a year's worth at a time. Remember, there's no cost for the entire trial period -- you only pay if you want to continue past your free trial.

Could I make the site free for teachers by carrying ads? Yes, I suppose I could. But I've never been tempted to carry advertising on the site. The reason is very simple: businesses cater to their customers. If the site were advertising-based, advertisers themselves would be my customers, and at the end of the day I would have to make sure they were happy instead of the teachers and students who use the site. It's a big conflict of interest: I would only get paid when potential students left the site by clicking on an advertisement.

I don't want to run that kind of business! By charging teachers on the site a small fee, I can make sure their experience with the site is positive, and that their potential students see a clean, fast-loading website instead of an advertising-laden mess.

What should I do if I have a problem or a question about the site?
