Chelley Graves | Offering private lessons in Wichita, Kansas |
Introduction Hi! My name is Chelley and I love teaching! I have been teaching the violin for 22 years and have a private studio of 35 students. I absolutely love seeing a student "get it" finally after working on a technique for a while and watching their face light up as they learn something new! I am a very happy person with a bubbly personality and never, ever yell at my students! I don't think there is a place for yelling and demeaning students. Music should be a fun, learning experience, and of course there is hard work involved and many hours of practice, but you should love going to your music lesson and not have to drag your student to get him/her there! : )
My Teaching Background I started the violin when I was seven years old in Omaha, NE and studied privately with many teachers, so I had the opportunity to study many different styles and techniques. My greatest teachers were Nancy Luttrell, associate professor at Wichita State University, and Andrzej Grabiec, who is a renowned soloist around the world! I have a Bachelor's of Music Performance from Wichita State University and am 30 hours short of an education degree in Music. I have taught privately for many years and my students range in age from 5-65! Many of my students have been accepted into the Youth Symphony program, District and State orchestra with KMEA and have won major scholarships to prestigious college music programs. Recently, two of my seniors won $40,000 scholarships in violin to St. Olaf college and Oklahoma City University. I have performed for numerous master classes and have judged many competitions and auditions. I currently play with the Wichita Symphony in the first violin section and have a band named "Unlike Others" that tours around the country playing for conferences and events.
My Teaching Philosophy I look for genuine interest in the violin, not just because your mother is making you take lessons! : ) I understand that not everyone is going to grow up and major in the violin and make it their profession, but I do expect hard work from my students while they are in my studio and an effort! In return, I can offer that you will definitely learn to play the violin and have fun while learning.
Rates And Availability My studio is located at Immanuel Baptist Church in Wichita, KS. I have taught there for 15 years. I charge $18 for 30 minutes, $25 for 45 minutes, and $35 an hour.
