LOCATION & AVAILABILITY: I teach a very select number of students in Tacoma at my home music studio. I only teach at 10:00 am Tuesday-Friday. NO AFTER SCHOOL TIMES ARE AVAILABLE.

WHO I AM: I am a teacher and performer in the greater Puget Sound area. I began my musical studies at the age of 8 on the piano and then fell in love with the cello at age 10. The most influential educational experiences I had were: participating with the Tacoma Youth Symphony for many years, studying as a cello performance major with Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel at UPS and spending a summer in Austria studying with the cello professor from the Salzburg Mozarteum.

I have taught hundreds of students since 1994. Besides private lessons, I have taught in group settings at Pierce College, for the Tacoma Youth Symphony and volunteered in the Tacoma Public School System.

Besides teaching, I perform 50+ times per year with Arcobaleno Strings, the Tacoma Symphony and the Seattle Rock Orchestra. Highlights of my performance career include the position of principal cellist for an international orchestra based in Rome, Italy.

CELLO: I teach ages 7-97, beginning through advanced. (If you have a student younger than 7 that wants to start, I suggest we start on piano first.) I pride myself on giving students a solid foundation in their cello study no matter which direction they hope to take. (Living room performer or conservatory applicant.) I am very methodical so as to not skip any important steps, but also flexible to find what works best for each student. With time and practice, students will learn correct technique as well as develop their musical voice and theory as it applies. I set up students to become fluent in reading sheet music as well as fine-tuning their auditory skills. Correct body mechanics are also emphasized to lessen the possibility of injury and to make beautiful music as easy as possible. (I have studied anatomy and physiology.)

THEORY: I teach theory to musicians and non-musicians alike. Perhaps you play an instrument or sing and would like a little help understanding better what is on the page. Maybe you are a music lover who doesn’t play an instrument, but you are curious to understand what music is comprised of. Or maybe you are a parent of a music student and you want to understand better what your child is learning. My sheer enthusiasm for theory means that your lessons will never be “dry!” Music is a lot like math and puzzles. If you enjoy figuring things out, you will enjoy theory.

PIANO: Although I am much more a cellist than a pianist, I enjoy teaching beginning piano and have had successful results getting new piano students off to a good start. I take beginning piano students as young as 5 and up.

TUITION: Lessons are year-round on an open sign-up basis. I maintain a very flexible schedule by only scheduling one week at a time with students. You do not have a regular weekly reserved time which you are committed to or obliged to pay for. For some students this is ideal.
Other students need a teacher with a more regular commitment. Rates are $30 for 30 minutes, $40 for 45 minutes and $50 for an hour.

A complete lesson policy is available at your first lesson.

CLOSING NOTES: My very nature is to be a teacher and I thoroughly enjoy it. I like the challenge of creatively finding the right approach for each student to be successful. I am thankful to have and have had so many wonderful students over the years that become my friends in the process.
