    About MeContact Me

Music is a gift that moves us and soothes us. It is emotionally edifying, uplifting and inspiring. It has the ability to affect us in infinite ways. Music is a universal language bridging all peoples and tongues.

Music has been part of my life since early childhood and was very anxious for piano lessons and also took ballet. Along the way with both taking up so many hours, it became necessary to make a choice; I chose piano and was off and running! I had a wonderful master teacher who carefully nurtured my talent and interest in the piano. During these pre-college years I competed in many competitions – Southern California Bach Festival, CPMT Auditions, CMTA Auditions, regional and state competitions, concerto and sonata competitions, various University competitions and more, placing mostly 1st, 2nd or 3rd and performing at state levels often. I sang in high school choirs and touring choirs and accompanied extensively at universities and churches. Having graduated high school at 16, I immediately began at California State University, Northridge – Piano Pedagogy Major. During my time there I took all possible pedagogy classes and minored in Italian and Harpsichord. I have taught ever since, with students from pre-school age to adult, beginner to collegiate. I love teaching! All students need to be able to explore and identify their music potential and I strive to provide them with everything they need to be proficient pianists and musicians. Music is my passion and I enjoy seeing students excel in piano. .

    Teaching Background
I have taught students from age 4 through 75 for over 30 years. I incorporate music theory, ear training, sight singing and sight reading, music history, improvisation, FUN! and composition into lessons. I have a Piano Master Class most months which is included in my rates. All students attend this 45-60 minute class. This class concentrates on ear training, music history, performance and more, sometimes with guest musicians. Many of my students have progressed to obtain their music degrees, become teachers and musicians in many facets of the field.

    Other Background
With music the major force in my life, I have been involved in and currently participate in several music and professional organizations including, The Rainier Chorale, Seattle Oratorio Society, Seattle Recorder Society, Church Choir Director, Church Choir Accompanist, City Arts Commissioner, Music Teachers National Association, Washington State Music Teachers Association and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. I have adjudicated for the PTA Reflections program in Visual Arts, Literature and Music at all levels except national. I have been in over 25 productions of Handels Messiah as either continuo (harpsichord) or singing in the trained choir. I have accompanied extensively in church and have also been church organist. I regularly accompany in schools during the Solo and Ensemble competitions from local to state levels.

    Teaching Philosophy
Before we are brought into this world we are exposed to many positive and negative things even through the womb. I fully believe that everyone should be exposed to music constantly even before birth. All students learn differently and this determines the method and rate of speed in learning. Depending on the age of the student, there are many markers that help determine music instruction such as age, desire, maturity, attention span and physical abilities. Some young children are quite advanced and others need more time before beginning lessons. These students would benefit from music and movement classes, or early childhood music programs. I use a few different methods for beginners through intermediate and use many books for supplemental material. Children are like sponges and soak everything in! All students deserve to have an excellent music education. My teaching style and philosophy is to train each student with fun and challenging music and activities to help them discover their own musical style and give them a thorough music education through lessons. This is rewarding and encouraging for them. While many students have a very recreational desire, it is also important to remember that Practice Makes Perfect. The practice ethic in piano lessons is to be taken seriously. I have an in-studio program to help encourage practice and progress.

My students regularly participate in WSMTA Adjudications (Evaluations) and Competitions as well at the NGPT Adjudications.

    Rates and Availability
I teach only out of my home. My basic rates depend on length of 30/45/60 minute lesson. The length of lesson depends on level of advancement and learning style. While too lengthy to explain, I prorate my lessons per school year on the Kent School District schedule and holiday schedule. So, my actual monthly rates are slightly different (a little less). I program two missed lessons for illness/family emergency that you do not pay for, on a yearly basis. All monthly lesson rates include all Master Classes. Family discounts are available. Recitals are given twice yearly at my home unless a larger facility is needed. Of course all lesson materials are extra. I am available Mon-Thurs 7:30-10:30 AM and 2:30-6:30 PM, and Saturday 8:00-9:00 AM only. I do not teach on Friday or Sunday.

I anxiously look forward to meeting you or your student and helping you become the musician you have always dreamed of being!
