    About MeContact Me
I teach Mandolin, Fiddle and Improvisation in many styles, all ages and levels. Private in person lessons and Skype lessons to anywhere.

    My Teaching Background
I have taught full time private lessons in the greater Seattle for over 30 years. I have taught hundreds of folks from beginners to pros, from ages 4 to 94. Advanced players come to me to study Bluegrass, Old time and Jazz, but I am also very comfortable teaching folks from the beginning.

I have studied ergonomics of playing stringed instruments and incorporate that into my teaching. I have extensively studied the Bluegrass mandolin styles of Sam Bush and Bill Monroe, the Bluegrass fiddle styles of Kenny Baker and Bobby Hicks, the Texas fiddle style of Benny Thomasson, and the jazz improvising styles of Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown. All these diverse players shape my teaching and playing style.

In 1994, I was Adult National Fiddle Champion at Weiser Idaho. In 1983, I placed in the top 5 at the Walnut Valley National Mandolin Contest in Winfield Kansas. I currently write a regular instruction column for Mandolin Magazine and have authored 11 books on fiddle and mandolin playing. They are available for free download at Also you can find performance and sample teaching videos at my web site.

    My Teaching Philosophy
I am a patient teacher and cater my teaching to the individuals needs. I like to make the lessons FUN!!, yet work on individual improvement within your goals. You will enjoy coming to lessons.
