    Why Sing?

Fun and hard work don't have to be opposites. Voice Study allows the singer to take technical and artistic areas of learning and translate them to emotional expression. Voice lessons offer a chance to find your own unique vocal sound and to develop your expressive capabilities. Plus, singing is just good for the soul!

The Young Voice. Voice study typically begins no earlier than age 15. Even at this age the vocal mechanism is still developing. We have to take care to nurture its growth and to introduce sound technical concepts as appropriate to the individual. Ask me about an assessment for a younger singer. Also, I can recommend some good options for development of a younger singer prior to voice lessons.

The Adult Voice - There is no maximum age for voice study! All voices can enjoy great refreshment by way of a Technique Tune-Up.
It is wonderful to know that the singing voice grows richer with age. Clear Technical Understanding and a more fine-tuned coordination help the Adult Singer to enjoy the gift of expressive singing as long as there are songs to sing!

Nancy Klingman, Soprano, is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher with lifelong performance background in opera, recital and concert. Her studio offers comprehensive training for the singing performer - concentrating on singing technique, language and diction, acting and interpretation, collaboration with other musicians, and also general musical training according to the needs of the individual. Ms. Klingman leads the twice yearly Weekend Intensive Workshop: "Aria Bootcamp" which offers the singer an opportunity to fine-tune his/her aria performance. Her studio also offers an ongoing Lyric Diction course which covers Italian, German and French diction for singers. Her summer workshop for emerging singers: Singer's Performance Week comes around each year in July.

Nancy Klingman has performed widely in Chicago and New York and has appeared in regional opera productions in the Midwest, England, and Italy in such roles as the Countess in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni, and The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Frasquita in Carmen, Miss Wordsworth in Albert Herring and Second Lady in The Magic Flute. She has been featured at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy. In oratorio and choral works, Ms. Klingman has been heard in such works as Handel's Messiah, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Haydn's Creation, Brahms' German Requiem, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, and Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music.

    Private Lessons
The minimum age for beginning voice study is generally 15.
Each voice matures at its own rate.
An initial consultation can determine the student's readiness to start voice study.
There is no maximum age for voice study!

Lessons are usually weekly. Regular attendance as well as steady practice will yield the best results.

Payment by cash or check - either in advance, or at the time of the lesson is requested. The Lesson Time is reserved exclusively for the student. 24 hour advance notice of cancellation is required. The student must pay for any lessons not cancelled in advance. In this, as in all things, there is also grace and sometimes forgiveness!

    Performance Workshops
These small group classes are limited to 5 singers.
This format gives the singer a chance to work on a wide range of performance skills. Acting and song interpretation are best learned through experience.
Singers are guided to experiment with expression and movement. Classes are twice per month and are available on a first come first reserved basis for a small fee.

    Studio Recitals
Studio Recitals take place at Holy Names Music Center's McNally Recital Hall and are scheduled six times between October and June. Students are encouraged but not required to participate. These informal recitals are a stepping stone to more formal performance opportunities. The goal of singing in a recital tends to focus and motivate practice.

    Aria Boot Camp
This intensive workshop is designed for singers who have some experience with operatic arias. It is especially valuable for Audition Preparation as it deepens and enhances expression. Analysis of the dramatic context along with specific performance styles and true understanding of the text will bring your aria to life! Workshops usually take place over the course of a week with classes on weeknights and Saturday with a Sunday performance. Before and After videos help singers mark progress in their performance.

    Lesson and Recital Recording
The student should bring an SD Card for use in my digital recorder, or some other recording device of their choosing.
Recording of lessons can be very helpful in the development of technical and expressive skills. Recitals are video recorded as a valuable tool for seeing progress as time goes on.

    Singer's Performance Week
This week-long Summer Workshop takes place at Holy Names Music Center in Late July each year. 3-9 p.m. Monday-Friday.
30 hours of intensive training in all areas of singing performance. Vocal Technique, Acting, Stage Movement, Interpretation, Dance, Phonetics, Alexander Technique, Improv, and much more.

    Scheduling
My Studio is located on Spokane's South Hill. Lessons are Monday-Friday and scheduling is best done over the phone.
    Contact me for availability.
