Kaia Chessen | Offering private lessons in Seattle, Washington |
Play with Passion! As a classically trained cellist, cello instructor, singer, and songwriter living and teaching in Seattle, I offer instruction in cello technique ranging from classical Suzuki Method to free-styling improvisational practice (an imperative and often ignored step to auditory development) to indie, rock, and pop which are increasingly beginning to involve stringed instruments. Throughout private lessons, you or your child will benefit from the experiences of an orchestral veteran and an active member of the alternative Seattle music scene.
My Teaching Background I have studied with highly respected teachers such as Ilse Marie Lee, Irene Sharp, and Nancy Critelli, have had classical training for well over a decade, and have played in an array of classical ensembles and orchestras. This aside, however, I offer something unique in that I have forged my way into musical genres often closed to string players. I currently play in several innovative indie bands for which I am often writing music, playing live shows, and working on albums.
My Teaching Philosophy It's important to me to adjust the focus of my lessons to fit individually with the needs of each student. Since everyone takes to different genres, composers, styles and has a different musical ability, learning curve, physical relation to the instrument, etc., I couldn't imagine fashioning one set of courses that would be appropriate for everyone. I try to find where each student is having difficulties and hone in on those. The way you learn the cello has a lot to do with who you are, what you want to achieve and your motivation to do it, so as I see it, my job is to help you find that road and travel down it as quickly and smoothly as possible!
I was trained classically (as almost all string players are) and so I often start beginners playing out of the Suzuki books as I was (but not necessarily Suzuki method!). This is, of course, an optional route. I think it's a common misassumption that there is one route to learning the cello (of course, every instructor will disagree on which!) and that there is a specific way to be great at your instrument. In truth, there are a thousand routes to learning the cello and a million ways to play well. The classical world tends to be more strict about these, but I like to see people using their instruments beyond those boundaries and really using them as a means to creativity and passion.
Rates And Availability My current rate for lessons is $40/hr. I teach from my home in the U-District. Parking is available and I am near the main bus-line. Please email or call with any and all questions and I'll be happy to answer them!
