Willie Chen | Offering private lessons in Cypress, California |
Introduction I am an experienced music teacher who has taught piano students of all skills and levels--but mostly late-intermediate to advanced students. My primary focus is teaching students who love to play piano. The studio offers the annual Certificate of Merit (TM) program. Students participate in semi-annual recitals plus various festivals and competitions throughout the year.
The name "Certificate of Merit" is a trademark of MTAC (Music Teachers' Association of California). The use of the name CM does not imply endorsement of MTAC.
My Teaching Background I am a graduate of UC Irvine with a B.Mus. degree in Piano Performance, in addition to two other undergraduate degrees in English and Film. In 2002, I earned a M.A. degree in Teaching, also from UC Irvine. I maintain a private studio of highly-dedicated piano students with an emphasis in public performance and music theory. As of September 2008, students from my studio have garnered over 85 accolades at festivals and competitions, in addition to dozens of honors (branch and state levels) and high marks at their annual CM exams.
My Teaching Philosophy The most important characteristic in my students is their love for piano. If the student doesn't enjoy piano, then there is no need for piano lessons. Although I do try to get students excited about piano, it is ultimately the student who has to display that passion from the inside out. Beyond that, my teaching philosophy includes: 1. Setting attainable goals in annual CM exams and festivals; 2. Programming interesting music for recitals and public performances; 3. Immersing students in a variety of piano music across different genres and historical periods; 4. Ensuring proper technique, with strong emphases in hand position, body posture, tone production, and fingering; 5. Connecting music theory and music history to the student's current repertoire.
